Mangosteen – Why all the sudden interest?

Known for Thousands of Years, Now Only Through Modern Nanoemulsion Technology Can the Full Potential Be Discovered!

Author’s note: This is a scholarly fact-based article, but I decided to write it in the first person so that I could express my personal opinion and tell some stories you might enjoy. You won’t see this as a white paper anytime soon, but I believe you will find value!

Mangosteen is a plant native to SE Asia and has been known for thousands of years, first used as a medicine starting in ancient times. Written records exist in 15th-century Chinese and more recently in Species Plantarum by Linnaeus in 1753.

After centuries of use by naturopathic practitioners, conventional scientific research began around 1980. As the body of knowledge grew, results from animal research caused a sharp expansion in 2005 in tests and reports, and by 2013 significant numbers of human studies exploded to over 4,000 published reports, white papers, and clinical trials by 2017. Why?

Stories have long circulated about the high-performance healing qualities of the fruit from the mangosteen tree, across a wide range of diseases, including:

Inflammation is a common denominator. Mangosteen has been identified as a very effective anti-inflammatory, which is likely why it has been used successfully against such a wide range of diseases. 

Such a wide range of diseases and afflictions raises the question, “Is there a common thread?” At least one common thread is inflammation, which in some cases is the cause, in other cases the result, and in all cases the potential to become a life-threatening raging fire.

In the case of mangosteen, xanthones were discovered to be the active ingredient. Xanthones are found in the pericarp (rind) and have been extracted and combined in nanoemulsions for better concentration.

Xanthones

The Problem of Density

Some nutrients have been proven highly effective via mega dosing, for example, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. A shortage of vitamin C can lead to such conditions as:

A Possible Solution for Chronic Inflammation Caused by Diabetes

The impact of combining xanthones derived from mangosteen pericarp extract with nanoemulsion technology for use in the management of inflammation.

Let’s start with a simplified description of diabetes, the resulting effects of inflammation, and the likely results if untreated. 

Diabetes is a state in which the pancreas becomes unable to produce enough insulin to manage blood sugar levels. When cells don’t interact in a normal way with insulin, they don’t take in enough sugar and the pancreas must continuously produce greater and greater amounts of insulin until the cellular need for insulin surpasses the pancreas’ ability to produce it.

Meanwhile, the insulin produced in the pancreas at maximum levels creates irritation of the pancreatic cells and inflammation begins. This inflammation unchecked, can eventually scar the pancreas and render it unable to function. As the inflammation spreads, other organs are affected.

In the kidneys, diabetes-related inflammation can lead to further damage to the already compromised kidneys, leading to kidney failure. 

Diabetes-related inflammation in the eyes can cause redness, swelling, and pain, and if left untreated can cause vision loss or even blindness. 

Diabetes-related inflammation of the heart is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other health issues. When the heart is inflamed, it can become stiff and thick, which can lead to heart failure. This is why people with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Inflammation also disrupts the normal functioning of the heart, leading to other complications such as arrhythmias and inflammation of the pericardial sack. Furthermore, chronic inflammation can lead to the formation of plaque and blockages in the arteries, which can cause a heart attack.

Diabetes-related inflammation in the nerves can cause loss of sensation and if not managed quickly, can lead to permanent damage to the nervous system, eventually resulting in paralysis. Whether induced by diabetes, chronic stress, obesity, or autoimmune disorders, a chronic state of inflammation can lead to numerous health problems, including heart disease, arthritis, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer.

Without proper treatment, inflammation in these organs can have long-term and eventually life-threatening consequences.

OTC and Prescription Drugs

The historic response to inflammation by modern medicine has been the use of NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) in both over-the-counter and prescription-strength drugs. OTC (Over-The-Counter) NSAIDs include pills like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium, while celecoxib (Celebrex) is an example of a prescription drug. 

These drugs block inflammatory proteins in the body, called COX-1 and COX-2, to cut inflammation and ease pain. That reduces swelling and fevers, too. Aspirin, unlike other NSAIDs, also prevents your blood from forming clots, which can protect you from heart attacks and strokes. The others may actually promote clots.

These inflammation/painkillers are for short-term use. You shouldn’t take them for more than 10 days for pain and 3 days for fever. If you take them for too long, you are at higher risk for side effects. If you feel you need to take NSAIDs regularly for arthritis pain, talk to your doctor to be sure it’s safe for you. In some people, NSAIDs can cause stomach pain, nausea, bleeding, ulcers, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. NSAIDs other than aspirin can also raise your risk of heart attack or stroke, even after just 1 week.

Stomach problems are the most common complaint people have about these drugs. To avoid nausea or a belly ache, take your NSAID with food, milk, or antacids. Your doctor can also prescribe acid-controlling medicine to take with NSAIDs to protect your stomach and prevent ulcers.

Some people who can’t tolerate the stomach-related problems that NSAIDs may cause can use prescription celecoxib instead. NSAIDs block two types of COX enzymes, including one that also protects your stomach. Celecoxib only blocks the COX enzyme that causes inflammation and pain. However, high doses of celecoxib could still cause side effects like bleeding.

NSAIDs Addiction, Side Effects

Side effects and complications of NSAIDs are common and serious. In one study, the risk of NSAIDs adverse drug reactions was found to be 26% (Gor 2011). Complications include upper gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers, heartburn, ringing in the ears, headaches, dizziness, liver or kidney problems, leg swelling, high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and death. 

In June of 1999, The New England Journal of Medicine estimated that 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur among Americans with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis every year (Wolfe 1999). 

Over 100,000 NSAIDs users are hospitalized per year for gastrointestinal complications. A review of 17 studies found that 11% of preventable drug-related hospital admissions could be attributed to NSAIDs (Howard 2007). In 2005, U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public health advisory warning people of the increased cardiovascular risks of NSAIDS, and again in 2007 they published a medication guide for NSAIDs recommending the lowest dose possible for patients using these drugs.

Bioavailability – The Argument Against Herbal Drug Alternatives and the Supplement Industry
